Cissus quadrangularis, commonly known as Veld Grape, Devil's Backbone, Hadjod (in India), and by various other vernacular names, is a perennial plant of the grape family, Vitaceae. It is native to tropical Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, showcasing the plant's adaptability to a range of climates, particularly arid environments. The species is well-regarded for its medicinal properties and has been used in traditional medicine systems across various cultures.

The plant is characterized by its distinctive quadrangular (four-sided), segmented stems that resemble the shape of a backbone, which is where one of its common names, "Devil's Backbone," derives from. These stems are green to yellowish-green in color and can grow quite long, often sprawling or climbing with the help of tendrils that emerge from the nodes. The leaves are simple, broad, and succulent, arranged alternately along the stem, and usually have a toothed margin.

Cissus quadrangularis produces small, white or yellowish-green flowers that are inconspicuous compared to its lush foliage. The flowers give way to small, globular berries that turn red when ripe. Each segment of the stem is capable of rooting at the node when it comes into contact with moist soil, making the plant easy to propagate and spread.

This plant has garnered attention for its potential health benefits, including bone healing properties, weight loss, and anti-inflammatory effects. It contains a variety of phytochemicals such as flavonoids, vitamin C, and carotenoids, which are believed to contribute to its therapeutic effects. Research into these properties is ongoing, with studies exploring its potential in osteoporosis treatment, joint health, and metabolic syndrome management.

In addition to its medicinal uses, Cissus quadrangularis is also grown as an ornamental plant in gardens and homes, appreciated for its unique structure and ease of care. It thrives in well-drained soil under full to partial sunlight, requiring minimal water once established, which suits it for xeriscaping and as a houseplant in dry indoor environments.

Its adaptability, striking appearance, and health-promoting qualities make Cissus quadrangularis a fascinating plant both for botanical enthusiasts and for those interested in traditional and alternative medicine.
