What screams Florida coastline better than their native friend, the Sea Grape? Sea Grapes are a perennial fruiting shrub from the buckwheat family and are native to Florida, the Caribbean, South America, and the West Indies.  Sea Grape plants can be found in coastal hammocks and landscapes from central Florida southward.  

Tolerant to just about anything a shoreline can throw, be it salt, wind or hot summer sun, the sea grape thrives and holds its ground. Literally, being one of the best shoreline erosion controllers on the sand. These signature backdrops make noteworthy beach hedges. They bear large red-veined (more so when younger) ornamental leaves, historically used by sailors as natural notepads to document their on-shore explorations. Sea Grape leaves can measure up to 10 inches around.  That could be an entire treasure map!

No, Sea Grape plants are dioecious, meaning they require male and female plants to produce fruit. We recommend growing at least two or more plants for the best chance of fruit production!

When to Harvest Sea Grapes

The marble-sized fruits of the Sea Grape have been known for their musky, acid-sweet flesh and gigantic pits. When ripe and purple, you can use the Sea Grape fruit for jams, sorbets and even wine! When harvesting Sea Grapes for your own fresh-foraged snack throughout Summer and Fall, remember the deeper the purple the riper the fruit and better the flavor!

Only partly ripe Sea Grapes, however, have a pretty unassuming flavor, but they could their own unique purpose as pellets to fend off seagulls from your beach picnic.
