Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)
Pennyroyal, also known as Indian Mint or Mosquito Plant is a member of the Mint family and is native to Europe, N. Africa and the Middle East. Pennyroyal is an intensely strong fragrant perennial herb. It is a short plant that rarely grows above 2 feet and makes an excellent groundcover or potted plant.
The leaves are toothed and oval in shape. The aroma of crushed Pennyroyal leaves has been described as being similar to peppermint. It generally thrives in moist, damp areas and flowers brilliantly in spring.
There is a close cousin to this species that exists in North America and is referred to by the same common name. They are technically separate species, but both contain the same chemical constituents that allow them to be used in similar fashion.
