If you are a gardener known to dance to the beat of your own drum, cultivating the "A-cha-cha" could be your next great pick!

Gardeners of all levels can’t resist the lure of the Achacha tree. Garcinia humilis is native to South American countries like Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil, where locals know it as “Achachairú.” Its cultivation began with indigenous communities in the tropical lowlands of the Amazon Basin, and it has been traditionally used as a hunger suppressant and in skin healing. The name was adapted from Achachairu to simply Achacha for marketing purposes in Australia, where it was recently approved for commercial growth and is propelling Achacha into popularity on the world’s fruit platter.

The Achacha is native to medium-altitude rain forests, so it grows well in shady, humid climates in soil with good porosity. The Achacha tree can be slow growing, but eventually fruits with an abundant rhythm. Achacha trees grow to about 10-15 ft tall.

Its bright orange, egg-shaped fruits are said to be most similar to Mangosteen in flavor, but with about half of the sugar content! Achacha fruits grow enclosed in a rind, which keep for 4 to 6 weeks at room temperature once harvested. The rinds, rich in antioxidants, can also be infused and chilled into a sweet, tangy drink.

This plant has super potential! Along with numerous purported nutritional benefit, Garcinia humilis is also considered a good candidate for rain forest restoration efforts in areas of South America that have been damaged by deforestation and burning.

Our Achacha trees in size medium are grown from seed and known to fruit prolifically within 6 years of planting.  Our Achacha plants in size large are also grown from seed and capable of producing within 5 years.

    So far so good!

I received a healthy and appropriately sized tree very quickly. The plants come with instructions for repot and tips for recovery post shipping. I have to say that the extra steps taken for care of the tree are encouraging to see. SowExotic has multiple places that illustrate the sizes of plants so I was not surprised nor disappointed with my plant and it's appearance. It was obviously cared for before I got it and that's going to keep me here for my next plant that I decide to order.

    Special Note: Years to Fruit

This is just a “Special Note” to clear up any confusion regarding, HOW LONG it takes & WHEN this specific plant is EXPECTED TO FRUIT…??.. SHORT ANSWER = When Grown from Seed, this plant species typically fruits on or after {6 years} ••Sow Exotic’s Plants being sold are already approximately {5 Years OLD}, the Purchased Plant should FRUiT approximately {1 YEAR} from its purchased date. ———————————— Therefore, Customers should expect, (all things being equal and if the plant purchased thrives from proper environmental conditions, watering, sunlight, temperatures, etc.,), that their purchased Sow Exotic plant of this species should fruit approximately ONE YEAR from when it was purchased, (NOT an additional 6 years, as implied by a previous comment.)

    Happy little tropical fruit tree

I bought this plant after hearing many fruit enthusiasts calling it the most delicious fruit in the world. It’s a close relative to the purple mangosteen and is considered to have the perfect balance between sweetness and tartness with amazing flavor. I live in central Florida, and I was eager to add this little gem to my guava and mango collection. The plant arrived fairly soon after ordering in very good shape. There was lot of care put into the packaging! The rootball was wrapped in a biodegradable burlap bag, which can be planted with or without removing (I planted mine without it) It has been over a month since my achacha arrived and it is doing well :) It is very slow growing, so don’t be alarmed if it takes over a month for new leaves to form. I have it in light, easily draining soil in a clay pot and I keep it lightly watered daily with my other potted tropical fruits. It will eventually adapt to full sun, but I recommend starting it in part shade or under a screened canopy and away from walls to prevent it from overheating. I’ve only lightly fertilized it once and attached a metal stake to support/protect it. From what I read, it will take at least 5 years before it starts producing fruit. I imagine with patience and care, it will be worth the wait! Thank you Sow Exotic for my special plant!
