Vitamin C Superfruit with Tropical Sweet-Tart Flavor

Barbados Cherry, also known as Acerola, is a tropical evergreen shrub or small tree famous for its bright red, cherry-sized fruits packed with vitamin C—up to 30 times more than an orange! Native to the Caribbean and Central America, this fast-growing fruiter thrives in warm, sunny climates and produces multiple crops per year. Its glossy leaves, pink-lavender blossoms, and abundant fruits make it as beautiful as it is productive. The fruits are juicy, sweet-tart, and perfect for smoothies, juices, jellies, and fresh eating straight off the tree.

Why Grow Barbados Cherry?

  • Produces cherry-sized fruits rich in antioxidants and vitamin C
  • Multiple crops per year in warm climates
  • Fast-growing, evergreen, and highly ornamental
  • Delicious in juices, smoothies, jams, and desserts
  • Pollinator-friendly blooms attract bees and butterflies

Growing Tips:

Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Barbados Cherry loves warmth and humidity, performing best in USDA Zones 9–11. Water regularly, especially during fruiting, but avoid waterlogging. Mulch to conserve moisture and feed with a balanced organic fertilizer during the growing season. Prune lightly to shape and maintain manageable size. Can be grown in large containers in cooler climates and overwintered indoors.

Cultural & Culinary Significance:

Barbados Cherry (Acerola) is beloved across the Caribbean, Brazil, and Latin America as both a superfruit and a cultural staple. Its fruits are widely used for fresh juices, syrups, candies, and natural vitamin C supplements. In folk medicine, the fruit has been valued for immune-boosting and restorative properties for generations. Growing Barbados Cherry means not only enjoying a steady supply of tropical treats but also nurturing a plant with a rich cultural legacy and ecological value.

    Great quality plant!

Lucky to be able to order and then pick up, I did. My order included the Barbados Cherry. I received a very healthy plant, larger than expected and well tended. A big plus, since I had ordered sight unseen and taste unknown, they had a large shrub with ripe fruit by the roadside. The nursery attendant was kind to tell us about it, where to find it, and "help yourself to a handful." How often does that happen?

At the same time, i picked up "mysore" raspberries, blueberries, and a peach tree. All were beautiful compared to other mail order companies, I was extremely please and the plants are healthy and doing well. I highly recommend Sow Exotic!

I just received my Barbados cherry plant from Sow Exotic, and I have to say—I’m genuinely impressed. At first glance, I was a little worried. The plant looked a tad stressed from the journey, and I wasn’t quite sure how it would bounce back. But just a few days later, it’s already perking up, showing signs of new life, and looking happier by the hour. It’s like it just needed a little sunshine and love—don’t we all?

Now, let’s talk about the packaging. I won’t lie—the box was seriously secure. So secure, in fact, that I had a brief moment of panic while trying to open it. I was worried I’d accidentally damage the plant just getting it out! But nope—everything inside was protected like a treasure. And honestly, I kind of love that. You can tell Sow Exotic really cares about making sure their plants arrive safely, no matter what.

All in all, I’m super happy with this little green gem.
