Limeberry (Triphasia trifolia)
Regular price $26.95The perennial evergreen Limeberry, also known as Limoncito and Chinese Lemon, grows quickly but fruits slowly, releasing a delicious fragrance from every leaf as it grows. A member of the Rutaceae it has been popularized mainly for its hedge appeal. The Southeast Asian Limeberry Tree/Shrub grows aggressively and is resilient to frequent pruning, making it an ideal and impenetrable hedge with dense, spiny branches. It has a tendency to take over where it grows, so keep those pruners handy for taming growth!
The highly ornamental Limeberry Tree grows white flowers, rich with nectar and a sweet citrusy aroma that attracts endless hungry birds. These admiring flocks love both the flowers and the red-orange zesty, small fruits which ripen summer through fall.
Albeit the fruits are edible, acid-sweet, and somewhat reminiscent of limes, the shrubs are less often grown for their juicy, mucilaginous fruit- but they sure makes a delicious perk! Especially when the Limeberries are processed into sweet jams or juices. If you’re looking for a hearty hedge with a tasty seasonal treat, the Limeberry is a winner!
