The Brown Turkey Fig (Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey') is a versatile and prolific fig variety that thrives in various climates. Known for its medium to large, sweet fruits with a rich, honey-like flavor, this fig tree is a favorite among gardeners and food enthusiasts alike. Brown Turkey Figs produce medium to large fruits with a dark purplish-brown skin and a deep pink to red flesh. The figs have a mild, sweet flavor with a hint of nuttiness, making them perfect for fresh eating, preserves, and drying.

This fig tree is known for its vigorous growth and high productivity. It can reach up to 10-15 feet in height and spread, making it an excellent choice for both small and large gardens. It can also be grown in containers for those with limited space. The Brown Turkey Fig is adaptable to a wide range of climates, thriving in USDA hardiness zones 7-9. It is known for its cold-hardiness compared to other fig varieties, making it suitable for cooler regions. This fig tree prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning and fertilization. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to ensure healthy growth and fruit production. Brown Turkey Figs typically ripen from late summer to early fall. The fruits should be harvested when they are fully ripe, as they do not ripen well off the tree. Ripe figs will be soft to the touch and may slightly droop from the branch.

Figs are packed with essential nutrients, including dietary fiber, vitamins A, B, and K, as well as minerals like potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Enjoy Brown Turkey Figs fresh from the tree, in salads, desserts, or as a sweet addition to cheese platters. They are also excellent for making preserves, jams, and dried snacks. With its attractive foliage and bountiful fruit production, the Brown Turkey Fig tree adds aesthetic value to any garden or landscape.

    Brown turkey fig

This plant does very well here in El Paso, Texas where temps are over 100 in the summer, well below freezing in the winter, and the relative humidity is often under 10%. Makes a nice "small tree/large bush" with deep shade underneath. Very attractive but for best fruiting, requires ample water best provided by drip irrigation, or regular irrigation and high water table in the Lower and Upper Valley.
