Caffeinated Holly with a South American Tradition

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is an evergreen tree in the Holly family (Aquifoliaceae), native to the steamy subtropics of South America. Indigenous people of Paraguay first brewed the dried leaves into a delicious beverage that is naturally high in caffeine, antioxidants, and micronutrients. It is a beloved beverage throughout South America and is now gaining popularity worldwide as an alternative to coffee for its energizing effects.

Fragrant white flowers bloom on the tree during late fall and early winter, developing into bright red ornamental berries in spring. The thick, leathery leaves can be harvested and dried at any time of year once the foliage has become full on the tree. Yerba Mate can grow up to 50 ft. outdoors, while its adaptable growth habit also makes it suitable for growing in containers indoors or outdoors.

Cultural & Culinary Significance

Yerba Mate has deep cultural roots in South America, particularly Paraguay, where Indigenous people traditionally brewed the dried leaves into a flavorful, caffeinated beverage. Today, it is one of the region's best-known traditional beverages and is enjoyed as an alternative to coffee.

The dried leaves are brewed into tea and are valued for their caffeine content, antioxidants, and micronutrients. Yerba Mate is also popularly associated with boosting energy, supporting metabolism, and helping maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Why Grow Yerba Mate?

  • Produces thick, leathery leaves that can be harvested and dried for tea
  • Naturally contains caffeine, antioxidants, and micronutrients
  • Fragrant white flowers appear in late fall and early winter
  • Produces bright red ornamental berries in spring
  • Can grow into a 50 ft. tree outdoors or be maintained as a container plant

Growing Tips

Plant Yerba Mate in full sun to part shade and provide rich, loamy, well-draining soil that is never allowed to dry out. It prefers warm, humid conditions and consistent moisture. In suitable climates, it can grow into a large evergreen tree, while container growing allows it to be cultivated indoors or outdoors in colder regions. Protect plants from freezing temperatures outside their hardiness range.

    I’m so excited!

The plant arrived in great shape AND STILL ALIVE! I’ve ordered plants from other growers before (through the mail) and they have mostly arrived all dried out/dead. Not these little babies! Thank you for using compostable packaging and maintaining great quality plants!

    Amazing!

This plant tolerated two weeks in transit because USPS lost it for a while. Contacted SE's support and they were confident it woud endure the mishap but also offered to send a replacement if the plant didn't arrive. That same day arrived, masterfully packaged and doing extremely fine. Right now is thriving with multiple new shoots.
