Christmasberry (Lycium carolinianum) is a tough, adaptable shrub native to the southeastern United States and Caribbean, including Florida. This compact, thorny plant produces small, succulent gray-green leaves along sprawling, somewhat leggy branches. In fall and winter, clusters of bright red to orange berries appear, creating a striking contrast against the muted foliage and giving the plant its festive common name.

We’ve found Christmasberry growing wild along the rocky, sandy coasts of western Florida, where its natural tolerance for salt spray, drought, and poor soils allows it to thrive. While compact in stature, typically reaching 3–6 feet tall and wide, this resilient native has plenty of landscape value as a wildlife plant, coastal shrub, ground cover, or naturalized planting.
