Jaboticaba or Jabuticaba (aka Brazillian Grapetree) is a small, unique slow growing tropical evergreen fruit tree that produces purplish-black fruits with white pulp. The fruit has astringent grape-like skin and sweet rosey flavored pulp. It grows right off of the trunk of the tree and ranges from 1 to 3 inches in size. Fruit is typically eaten fresh but can be used to make juices, desserts, jams, or even fermented into wine.
Medicinally, the skin of the fruit is rich with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cancer fighting properties. Growing Jabuticaba is very easy as the tree is tolerant of a variety of soil conditions from sand to rich topsoil. Jabuticaba is also a popular specimen for bonsai.
