Aloe Vera is a perennial succulent plant famous for it's attractive thick, fleshy foliage and healing powers! Growing Aloe is also super easy. Plant Aloe in full sun or partial shade in a well-drained soil. Once established, it will be extremely drought tolerant. Aloe blooms red and orange flowers in the warm months of the year.
It's very attractive to hummingbirds and insect pollinators. Aloe is fast growing and spreads through new plants at it's base, called pups, making it an excellent ornamental and useful ground cover.
Besides being a beautiful ornamental succulent, most grow Aloe Vera for the gel in the leaves. Its soothing, moisturizing and cooling properties are often used to treat superficial burns and sunburn providing a relief from the pain (believe us Floridians when we say it works!) As a topical gel, it can also be used during outbreaks of acne. There are many culinary uses for the gel, too! It can be used in desserts, yogurt, and beverages.
