Growing Tips
Plant Valerian Root in full sun to part shade and provide average to rich, well-drained soil. Keep the soil adequately moist, particularly while plants are establishing and actively growing, but avoid consistently waterlogged conditions. Valerian is a fast-growing perennial herb that can reach up to 3 ft. tall and is hardy outdoors in Zones 3–9. It can also be grown in containers and overwintered in a patio or greenhouse setting in Zone 4 and colder climates. If growing Valerian specifically for its medicinal roots, choose an easy-to-access location because the roots are the primary part harvested. Our Valerian Root is grown from seed and can be harvested within the growing season, with the main harvest taking place in fall. Remove damaged or spent foliage as needed and allow the fragrant pale-pink or white flowers to attract pollinators throughout the growing season.
