Cherry of the Rio Grande, also known as Big River Cherry is a rare, beautiful tropical fruit tree native to Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay.  It is a rare and unique Eugenia related to Surinam Cherry, Pitanga, Grumichama and Pitomba.  Despite being a tropical plant, the Cherry of the Rio Grande is quite drought tolerant and mature trees will withstand a frost.

The oblong fruits emerge just weeks after flowering with a pale pink to red skin and mature to a dark red-wine and almost purple-black color. It has a bold, sweet flavor and can be described as a combination of cherry and plum, and some even say hints of banana.  It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and high amounts of vitamins A and C, B-complex vitamins, as well as a small amount of iron, magnesium and potassium.

    Cherry of the Rio Grande

Smaller than I would have liked, but is came healthy and in good shape. I've since learned that it probably isn't best for AZ, but I'm going to see if I can make it into an inside plant.

    Healthy and vibrant

I ordered this tree in the extra large size and it arrived looking very healthy. It even had blossoms on it already! I'm very satisfied and will order from them again

    XL Very Nice

This was the third plant I. My order, been hunting one for a while since the one I brought with me dies when I put it in the ground, that was a very healthy plant so was sad. After searching order from here and glad I did, this is a slightly different variety but still arrived about 4 ft tall central stem with several low stems, instead of training as a tree like my other will let this one bush which seems to match this particular variety. Very happy with purchase since I am in Palm Bay FL and last time to get one of these I had to go to Homestead FL.
