The Mountain Papaya, also known as Babaco, is a fascinating and exotic plant ideal for adventurous gardeners. Native to the highlands of South America, particularly in Ecuador, this plant is a smaller, more cold-tolerant relative of the common papaya. It's characterized by its unique, pentagonal shape and compact size, generally reaching about 5 to 8 feet in height, which makes it suitable for smaller gardens or as a container plant in colder climates.

The Mountain Papaya stands out for its striking, elongated fruits, which have a distinctive five-sided shape. These fruits are smooth-skinned, turning from green to a bright yellow as they ripen. Unlike common papayas, the Mountain Papaya's fruits are seedless, with a juicy and soft flesh that offers a deliciously sweet and slightly tangy flavor, reminiscent of a mix of papaya, melon, and strawberry.

When it comes to growing conditions, the Mountain Papaya is relatively hardy but prefers a temperate to subtropical climate. It can withstand cooler temperatures better than its tropical cousins but should be protected from frost. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, but care should be taken to avoid waterlogging.

Ideal for those seeking an unusual and tasty addition to their garden, the Mountain Papaya is not only attractive but also offers the reward of its unique, flavorful fruits. Its ease of care and resilience to cooler temperatures make it a valuable plant for a range of garden settings.

Growing Guide for Dwarf Red Lady Papaya

Climate and Soil Requirements

  • Climate: Dwarf Red Lady Papaya thrives in warm, tropical to subtropical climates and is best suited for USDA hardiness zones 9-11. It requires warm temperatures and plenty of sunlight to grow and fruit year-round. In cooler regions, it can be grown in containers and moved indoors during colder months.
  • Soil: Papayas prefer well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0-7.0) are ideal. Avoid heavy clay soils that retain too much water, as papayas are sensitive to waterlogged conditions.

Planting

  1. Location: Choose a sunny location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun is essential for optimal fruit production.
  2. Soil Preparation: Prepare the soil by loosening it and adding organic compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.
  3. Planting Time: Plant in the spring or early summer when the soil is warm and the risk of frost has passed.
  4. Spacing: Space plants 5-6 feet apart to allow for their full growth and spreading canopy.

Watering

  • Regular Moisture: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Papayas are sensitive to drought but also do not tolerate standing water. Water deeply once the top 1-2 inches of soil has dried out.

Sunlight and Fertilizing

  • Full Sun: Ensure the tree receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day for vigorous growth and optimal fruit development.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 6-8 weeks during the growing season. Organic compost or a high-potassium fertilizer can be applied to support fruit production.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Low Maintenance: Dwarf Red Lady Papaya requires minimal pruning. Remove any dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy. Pruning is not typically needed to control size, as this variety naturally remains compact.
  • Container Growing: This variety is ideal for growing in large containers. Use a well-draining potting mix and ensure the container has proper drainage holes.

Pest and Disease Management

  • Common Pests: The papaya tree may attract pests like aphids, spider mites, or fruit flies. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to manage infestations if necessary.
  • Diseases: Papayas can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or grown in poorly draining soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions and provide proper air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

Harvesting Dwarf Red Lady Papayas

When to Harvest:

  • Papayas typically ripen 7-9 months after planting and continue producing fruit year-round in warm climates. The fruit is ready to harvest when the skin turns from green to yellow. The fruit should be slightly soft to the touch.

How to Use:

  • Dwarf Red Lady Papayas are perfect for fresh eating, adding to fruit salads, or blending into smoothies. The fruit is rich in flavor and packed with nutrients, making it an excellent addition to a healthy diet.

    Great dwarf pfpaya

It appears from reading some of the reviews of this plant, that some folks have had problems with growing the papaya. I, though, have had no problems with it...loved watching it grow, bloom and set fruit. My plant bloomed and set about 12 fruits the first year planted, flowering in late summer with fruit showing shortly after. My plant is potted and on a caddy so that it can be moved at my convenience and when the seasons change. Presently, three fruits remain on the plant, with the plant being in my heated garage under grow lights, with a ripened fruit approximately once every two weeks or so. I use the fruit in smoothies and fruit salads as they are a little less sweet to my taste preference on their own. This plant grows well in the partial shade provided by being among my other tropical trees, during summer outside periods.

    Nice papaya

When I got this plant, about 1 year ago, I didn't know what to expect...although I read all of the SowExotic comments about it. I have it in a large planter on planter casters. It started to bloom about mid-summer with the blossoms being self-fertile, needing no help from me. Fruiting began, autumn began with me taking it into my heated garage, with large grow lights. The fruits ripened individually and individually fell off the tree into the planter, with no damage to them. The fruits were yellow and slightly soft. I rinsed off the fruit and cut it in two...no seeds. The taste was as described, slightly acidic, slightly sweet. It certainly was not my usual taste sensation of enjoyment, but not at all disliked. One fruit a week ripened and dropped. In total, this tree has produced about 12 fruits With six remaining to ripen. Would I recommend this tree? Sure. I like to experience different tropical fruits and this is certainly different.

    healthy small tree

I like the soil they use to grow these plants in. If this company has the trees I want I will always buy from them because they use superior soil compared to competitors. I've tried growing babaco's and papayas before but they always die of root rot when I bring them indoors over winter. But with the soil they use and my past experience I think I will be successful this time.
