The Chicago Hardy Fig (Ficus carica ‘Chicago Hardy’) is a standout variety known for its ability to withstand colder temperatures while still producing an abundance of delicious, sweet figs. Native to the Mediterranean but adapted for resilience, this fig tree is one of the most cold-tolerant varieties available, surviving in Zones 6-10 with proper winter protection. Its medium-sized, deep purple-brown fruits ripen in late summer to early fall, offering a rich, honey-like sweetness with a jammy texture.
Fast-growing and self-pollinating, Chicago Hardy Fig can be grown in the ground or in containers, making it a versatile choice for any garden. This exceptionally hardy fig tree is a must-have for fresh, homegrown fruit.

Fig trees grow up to 6-20 ft tall and wide, depending on variety. Growing fig trees in containers is quite easy, provided the roots have enough room to expand, and can also be pruned for bonsai or espalier. Fig trees go dormant and shed their leaves in the winter. This is an ideal time to prune.
