Rich Purple Fruit, Intense Tropical Flavor, & Pollinator Paradise

Black Beauty Passionfruit (Passiflora edulis 'Black Beauty') is a vigorous, fruiting vine that produces glossy dark-purple passionfruits bursting with sweet-tart, aromatic pulp. This cultivar is known for its bold flavor, juicy golden interior, and high yield—making it a favorite among passionfruit lovers, pollinators, and permaculture gardeners alike. Native to South America and loved worldwide, Black Beauty combines ornamental beauty with edible bounty: its iconic fringed flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while the fruit adds tropical flair to drinks, desserts, and preserves. Black Beauty is the main commercial variety in New Zealand. Compared to 'Purple Possum', this variety is slightly smaller and the skin is more matte than glossy.

Why Grow Black Beauty Passionfruit?

  • Produces dark-purple, highly aromatic passionfruits with sweet-tart pulp
  • Vining growth habit great for trellises, fences, and edible arbors
  • Fragrant flowers attract pollinators and are edible too
  • Fruits within the first 1–2 years when planted from rooted plants
  • Perfect for juice, desserts, cocktails, or fresh scooping

Growing Tips:

Plant Black Beauty in full sun with well-draining, fertile soil. This fast-growing vine thrives in warm, humid climates (Zones 9–11), but can be grown in large containers and overwintered indoors in cooler zones. Provide a strong trellis or structure to climb. Water regularly, especially during flowering and fruiting. Prune annually to shape and encourage airflow. Feed with a balanced organic fertilizer during the growing season. Self-pollinating but produces best with pollinator activity.
