Caribbean Native Tree with Explosive Seeds and Medicinal Bark

Mavi, commonly known as Mabi, Mauby, Soldierwood or Nakedwood, is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree native to the Caribbean, Central America, northern South America, and southern Florida. Reaching heights of 10–20 feet, it features a slender trunk with orange-brown bark that peels in thin layers, and glossy, elliptic leaves. The tree produces small, greenish-yellow flowers that attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

One of its most intriguing features is its seed dispersal mechanism: the mature seed capsules explosively release seeds with a popping sound reminiscent of musket fire, hence the name "Soldierwood." Beyond its ecological role, the bark of Colubrina elliptica is traditionally used to make Mauby, a bittersweet Caribbean beverage known for its refreshing taste and potential health benefits.
