🍂 September Growing Guide: Transition to Fall Planting

Florida Zone 9 & Tropical Growers:
September is a bridge month—the heat lingers but cooler days are ahead. Protect plants from storms, prune lightly, and prepare beds for fall. This is the perfect month to plant citrus, mulberries, and other fruit trees so they can establish before winter.

For Growers in Cooler Zones:
Start bringing in tender tropicals as nights dip below 55°F. Give plants a pest rinse before moving indoors. In greenhouses, watch night temps and add heat if needed.

What to Plant Now:

  • Zone 9+: Citrus, mulberries, guavas, tropical peppers, papaya, bananas, figs, and start cool-season crops like leafy greens and herbs under established trees.

  • Cooler zones or indoors: Dwarf fruit trees, tropical herbs, and salad greens in containers. Begin sprouting ginger and turmeric indoors for next spring.

Harvest Highlights:
Avocados are still in season, guavas are abundant, and bananas are ripening. Herbs are flourishing—perfect for harvesting and preserving.

Pro Tip: Interplant cool-season crops beneath fruit trees for a living mulch and bonus harvests.
