Live Luffa/Loofah Gourd Plant

The Loofah gourd plant is an annual fruiting vine plants that's incredible rewarding to grow. The vine produces very ornamental dark squash-like leaves, yellow blossoms, and a lot of fruit. The young gourds are totally edible and can be eaten raw, cooked, or even pickled when they're still quite small. They're very popular in the Caribbean.
However, patience is certainly rewarded with this plant. Wait for the large gourds to mature and dry on the vine. Once dry, the skin will peel away perfectly. The gourd can then be dried for a day or two in the sun to harden. Voila! You have a perfect bathing or cleaning loofah! One plant will yield enough sponges for a lifetime. Plus, the finished product also makes a great gift that's both thoughtful and useful!
